How to Review Yard Security Footage for Motion
Yard cameras often record large outdoor areas where branches, shadows, weather, and changing light can move for hours. A focused scan can narrow saved footage to picture changes around a gate, path, patio, fence, or another selected zone.

Why yard footage needs a focused review plan
An outdoor camera may include a wide lawn, trees, shrubs, a gate, neighboring areas, and open sky. Watching the complete recording is slow, while scanning the whole picture can produce many events caused by background motion rather than the zone you need to inspect.
Start with one useful outdoor area and one time period: changes near a side gate overnight, movement along a garden path during a known interval, or activity around a patio or fence section.
Branches, leaves, and plants
Wind can keep vegetation moving even when the gate or path remains quiet. A precise region can leave much of that motion outside the scan.
Sunlight, shadows, and weather
Clouds, long shadows, rain, and outdoor lights can change the image. Time range, region placement, and sensitivity influence how much of that change reaches the event list.
Large outdoor camera views
A single frame may contain the yard, sky, neighboring property, and a road beyond the fence. Focusing on one gate, path, or patio keeps the current review more specific.
Select the yard area you need to inspect
Place the detection region around a gate opening, garden path, patio edge, fence section, or another clearly defined part of the yard. When practical, leave the sky, tree canopy, reflective windows, busy roads, timestamp overlays, and unrelated plants outside the region.
For one review question, a single precise region is usually easier to interpret than most of the yard. The free tier supports one region; Pro supports multiple regions when separate outdoor areas must be included in the same scan.
A practical yard footage workflow
MoFind analyzes saved video files; it does not connect to a live yard camera. Prepare the relevant recordings on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac that will perform the scan.
Collect the relevant saved files
Start with recordings from the camera and date that match the review task. General support includes MP4, M4V, and MOV using H.264 or H.265 when the device can decode them; macOS can use compatibility processing for more common formats.
Choose the useful time period
Scan only the hours that matter—for example, overnight or around a known time—instead of processing the complete outdoor recording by default.
Focus on one outdoor zone
Draw the detection region around the gate, path, patio, fence line, garden entrance, or other part of the frame connected to your review question.
Set sensitivity and start the scan
Use a preset first. If branches or shifting shadows produce too many events, or smaller picture changes are missed, refine the region and sensitivity before scanning again.
Review the event list
Compare timestamps, durations, motion scores, and thumbnails. Preview useful events before deciding whether to save or export them; event-clip export requires Pro.
Turn the event list into a manageable review
Treat each event as a point where the selected part of the picture changed. Use its time, thumbnail, and preview to decide whether it is relevant to the question you are reviewing.
Compare nearby events in time
If you know an approximate time, review nearby events in chronological order before expanding to a longer part of the recording.
Use thumbnails as a first pass
Thumbnails help separate obvious branch or lighting changes from events that deserve a closer preview without assigning an identity or meaning to the motion.
Separate unrelated outdoor zones
If you need to inspect both a gate and a distant patio, separate focused scans can be easier to review than one broad region containing unrelated vegetation and shadows.
What yard motion scanning can—and cannot—show
MoFind performs motion analysis on the selected device, so saved yard videos are not uploaded for scanning. This is useful for footage that should remain local.
A detected event only means that the picture changed inside the selected region. It is not proof of trespassing, an unusual event, property damage, or the identity of a person, animal, or object in the frame.
Scans saved footage locally, focuses on selected regions and time ranges, and creates a reviewable list of picture-change events with timestamps and thumbnails.
It does not provide live monitoring, remote camera access, person or animal identification, object recognition, trespass detection, or automatic behavior classification.

How can I reduce events caused by moving trees?
Keep as much moving vegetation as practical outside the detection region, then adjust sensitivity if branch or shadow changes still produce too many events.
Can MoFind identify people or animals in the yard?
No. MoFind detects picture changes in saved video. It does not identify people, animals, species, or objects, and it does not classify behavior.
Are yard recordings uploaded?
No. Motion analysis runs locally on the selected iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
